The Stars of London’s Theatreland

The Stars of London’s Theatreland

London’s Theatreland, a glimmering constellation of stages and stories, has captivated audiences for centuries. In 1915, artist MacDonald Gill brought this vibrant world to life in his iconic Pictorial Map of London Theatreland, a whimsical masterpiece teeming with theatrical delights.

The map shows the principal streets and buildings, the theatres, parks and Underground Stations. Bordered with names of all the theatres in the district, humorous characters parody the peculiarities of every district.

A curtain call on some of the theatres and stars immortalised in the map include:

The Lyceum: Home to the legendary Henry Irving, renowned for his Shakespearean interpretations. He is depicted in full Hamlet attire, forever etched in theatrical lore.

His Majesty’s Theatre: A grand dame of the West End, it hosted premieres graced by stars like Ellen Terry and Herbert Beerbohm Tree. Its imposing facade is captured as a silent testament to its rich history.

The Gaiety Theatre: Bursting with music hall energy, it featured the dazzling talents of Gertie Gitana and Fred Terry. The illustration reflects the theatre’s lighthearted spirit with playful dancers and musicians.

Sir Herbert Tree: A versatile actor and manager, Tree’s larger-than-life personality shines through. He stands tall, embodying the grandeur of his theatrical reign.

Ellen Terry: Known as “The Lady Macbeth of the Victorian Stage,” Terry’s presence is captured in a graceful pose, forever linked to Shakespearean heroines.

Geraldine Farrar: A celebrated opera singer, Farrar’s captivating voice is immortalised, showcasing the diversity of talent on London’s stages.

The Ghost of Drury Lane: A nod to the theatre’s legendary hauntings, the spectral figure is incorporated, adding a touch of mystery.

Theatrical Agents: These unsung heroes find their place, highlighting the ecosystem that kept the theatreland alive.

The Audience: Not forgetting the heart of theatre, the poster includes a diverse crowd enjoying a performance, reminding us of the shared experience that brings stories to life.

But what of the graphic designer? Was he joking when he wrote in the bottom right corner of the map: “The Westminster Press” have exploited me, for the Underground Railway Company, who bid you now come to the Theatre-Land - To one of the theatres - Drawn by the hand of MacDonald Gill. 1915.
